2. Safety Instructions
Read all safety instructions before beginning work. A starter motor is part of the vehicle electrical system. Incorrect handling can cause short circuits, damaged components, or personal injury.
Before You Begin
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the starter or related wiring.
- Allow the engine and surrounding components to cool before working.
- Use the correct hand tools or socket tools for the fasteners.
- Keep metal tools away from direct contact between battery terminals and vehicle body metal.
- Wear gloves and eye protection when working around the battery, wiring, or under the vehicle.

3. Before Installation

Check the New Starter
- Inspect the packaging for visible shipping damage.
- Inspect the starter housing, terminals, mounting ears, and gear area for visible damage or deformation.
- Do not install a starter with cracked housing, bent terminals, damaged mounting ears, or obvious shipping damage.
At this stage, do not try to fully compare the new starter with the old starter. The old starter has not been removed yet. A full side-by-side comparison should be done after the old starter is removed and before the new one is installed.
Check the Vehicle First
Before assuming the starter is defective, check common starting-system issues:
- Battery charge condition
- Loose or corroded battery terminals
- Damaged or loose battery cables
- Ground cable condition
- Starter fuse, relay, or control circuit condition
- Obvious wiring damage near the starter
If the battery is weak or the wiring connection is poor, the vehicle may not start even with a good starter motor.

4. Removing the Old Starter
The following steps describe a general starter removal process. Actual access may vary by vehicle.
Step 1 - Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the starter. Loosen the nut that secures the cable to the negative terminal. You usually do not need to remove the nut completely. Once the cable is loose, lift it from the terminal and tuck it aside so it cannot touch the terminal while you work.
Do not remove the positive cable unless the vehicle service manual specifically requires it.

Step 2 - Raise and Support the Vehicle if Needed
Some starters can be accessed from above the engine bay. Others require access from underneath the vehicle. If the vehicle must be raised, use the correct lift points and support it with jack stands before working underneath.

Step 3 - Locate the Starter
The starter is usually mounted near the point where the engine meets the transmission. It is typically a cylindrical motor with a smaller solenoid attached and one or more wires connected to it.
If you cannot locate the starter, refer to the vehicle service manual.

Step 4 - Photograph the Wiring
Before removing any wires, take a clear photo of the original wiring layout. This helps ensure the wires are reconnected to the correct terminals during installation.

Step 5 - Disconnect the Starter Wiring
Disconnect the main power cable and any control wires connected to the starter solenoid. Some vehicles use nuts on threaded terminals. Others may use clips or connectors.
Do not pull on the wire itself. Pull connectors from the connector body and remove terminal nuts with the correct tool.

Step 6 - Remove the Retaining Bolts
Support the starter before removing the last retaining bolt. Starters can be heavy and may shift once the bolts are removed.
Remove the retaining bolts and carefully lower or remove the old starter from the vehicle.
Do not pry, hammer, or force the starter unless the vehicle service manual gives a specific procedure.

5. Installing the New Starter
Install the new starter only after the old starter has been removed and the two parts can be compared side by side.
Step 1 - Compare the Old and New Starter
Place the old starter and new starter side by side. Check the following:
- Overall shape and mounting orientation
- Mounting holes
- Gear position
- Solenoid location
- Main power terminal position
- Control terminal or connector position
Some replacement starters may have small visual differences. Small differences do not always mean the part is incorrect. If the mounting points, gear position, and required electrical connections do not match, stop and verify fitment before installation.

Step 2 - Position the New Starter
Place the new starter into the original mounting position. Make sure the starter sits flat against the mounting surface and is not angled or forced into position.

Step 3 - Start the Retaining Bolts for the First Few Turns
Use your fingers to thread each retaining bolt into the mounting holes for the first few turns before using a wrench or socket. This confirms the bolt is aligned correctly and reduces the risk of cross-threading. Once the bolts are properly started, tighten them securely according to the vehicle service manual.
Do not power the starter while it is loose or not fully mounted.

Step 4 - Reconnect the Wiring
Reconnect the wiring according to the photo you took before removal and the vehicle service manual. Make sure each wire is connected to the correct terminal and tightened securely.
Keep wiring away from moving, sharp, or hot components.

Step 5 - Reconnect the Battery
Reconnect the negative battery cable after the starter is mounted and wired. Make sure the battery cable is secure.

Step 6 - Test the Vehicle
Start the vehicle briefly and listen for unusual sounds. Stop and inspect if you hear grinding, repeated clicking, or abnormal noise.
If the vehicle still does not start, do not repeatedly crank the engine for long periods. Check the battery, wiring, starter relay, fuses, ground connections, and vehicle service information.
